How to Photograph Jewelry

This guide contains tips for taking clear photographs of your jewelry. These photographs are essential to evaluate and sell your items. 

Lighting

Choose an environment with strong, indirect light. If you do not have access to natural light, take two light sources with the same wattage bulb and place one on the right and left side of the object, so that the item is evenly illuminated from each side.

Object Position

Photograph your jewelry on a clean, smooth surface and try to find an area with a plain or neutral background. You may want to use putty or wax to stand items like rings upright or suspend earrings from a hanger. 

It's recommended to take the following photographs of your jewelry:
  1. Image of front, back, bottom and sides. Make sure to include the entire object in the photograph.
  2. Close‐up of any marks or stamps. Look in ring interiors, near the pin fastenings of brooches, near the bales of pendants, and near the clasps of necklaces and bracelets.
  3. Close‐up of the setting
  4. Close‐up images of any surface dirt, repairs, broken areas, dents, or other condition issues. Accurately reporting condition issues is essential to selling your property.
